More detailMás detalle
Robert Smalls was an American politician who was born into slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina. During the American Civil War, the still enslaved Smalls commandeered a Confederate transport ship in Charleston Harbor and sailed it from the Confederate-controlled waters of the harbor to the U.S. blockade that surrounded it. He then piloted the ship to the Union-controlled enclave in the Beaufort-Port Royal-Hilton Head area, where it became a Union warship. In the process, he freed himself, his crew, and their families. His example and persuasion helped convince President Abraham Lincoln to accept black soldiers into the Union Army.
Charleston, South CarolinaCharleston, South Carolina

Shrimp and grits is a dish that combines sautéed shrimp with grits-a porridge of boiled cornmeal. Shrimp and grits are associated with Lowcountry cuisine, eaten in coastal Georgia and South Carolina-John Martin Taylor says "I know of no dish more typically Lowcountry". Historically in the region, shrimp and grits were often eaten as breakfast during shrimp season, which peaks around November. The shrimp used were invariably small and sourced from creeks. In the southern US, shrimp and grits is today eaten as a comfort food. It resembles shrimp étouffée, a Cajun shrimp stew that is served over rice.
